Valhalla explore the West Highland Way - 23-06-2008During the weekend 31st May to 1st June, members of the Valhalla Explorer Scout Unit, based in Cumbernauld, set out to tackle part of the West Highland Way. After parking up at Rowardennen, Jamie Morris, Rae-ann Mulheron, Antony Richardson and Chris Gollings, along with Leaders Ian Morris and Chris Wilson set off on the "Way" through the woodland under the steep flanks of Ben Lomond. Their destination being the mountain bothy at Rowchoish.
On reaching the bothy after an arduous hike, the party set about setting a fire and preparing their meal. There was even time for a dip in Loch Lomond before settling down for the night, which thankfully was midge-free inside the bothy. The bothy at Rowchoish is the last remaining building in an area, where in 1759, used to be home to 9 families. The remains of other stone walls are a mute testimony to depopulation.
After a very cosy night and a hearty breakfast, the intrepid Explorers made their way back to Rowardennan, pausing only after an encounter with one of the famous feral Loch Lomond goats. Explorer Antony Richardson said, "Explorers give us great opportunities to do things that we wouldn't otherwise be able to.
