Alessandro Serio is an Italian who moved to Sweden to work and told the BBC of his experiences working abroad. Having lived in a variety of countries beforehand spanning Europe and Africa, he was surprised to find he did not enjoy Sweden as much as he had anticipated. Serio told the BBC, “My first impression was what I was expecting it to be. Everyone was blond and good looking and it was easy to get a job. There appeared to be perfect social integration and no conflict. But after a while I started to notice things were a bit different.”

Serio found that entering the system was rather difficult, a path riddled by work permits, classes on Swedish trivia, and other bureaucratic tasks. Serio found social cohesion to be completely lacking in Sweden also: “No-one eats together. They all sit and eat their lunch at the school I work at, at the same time, at the same table – but they don’t really talk to each other. Not even about the weather.” Oh dear! I bet Serio was looking at his hip hop uhren constantly, waiting to leave.
